Selecting legal representation is a critical moment for anyone fighting personal problems or criminal charges. Speaking skills are important in that without the know how of being able to present an argument, the trial will be lost. From there it would be up to the jury to decide a punishment, a situation that everybody in legal trouble would want to avoid. Charisma and charm are two other outward characteristics that people should look for in their lawyers. If the attorney working for a person is charming and charismatic, it is more likely that he or she will win their case and provide excellent service for their clients. Charisma can lead to more people on the jury believing in the attorney’s case, possibly enough to sway the jury to get a not guilty verdict.
When we have to choose a nursing home for a loved one, we try to make sure it is a good place; a place to care for them and treat them with dignity and respect. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always happen.
Too often we assume that when we need to place a senior in a nursing home that the home’s staff and management will take care of them the way we would. You would treat your beloved elder with love and respect, dignity and empathy, and would never dream of withholding medications; isolating your loved one; shoving them around; leaving them unattended in their own waste; or trying to steal their money. The facts show that currently over one and a half million seniors are placed in nursing homes for care. While this number may seem high to you, it is expected to triple within 30 years. This is largely due to the baby boomer generation coming of age; of age to require nursing home care. Shockingly, one in three nursing homes in the US have been cited for neglect or abuse despite the fact that the Nursing Home Reform Act (1987) says nursing home residents have the “right” to live somewhere that maintains or improves their physical and mental welfare.
The idea behind nursing homes is that they provide professional care to those who are having trouble caring for themselves. While that might be the theory, it appears that the reality is somewhat different and nursing home abuse is on the increase. We know this because of the latest cases going to court and articles in the newspapers and on TV. It’s not the ugly secret it once used to be, but it is still hidden from prying eyes when and where possible, and nursing home abuse is still ugly.

Patent a New Product? First of all, you cannot actually “patent” a product or service. You can only patent the innovation that went into creating that product or service. Applying for and receiving a patent has several benefits. 1. Protection and Exclusivity: First and foremost, getting a patent for your invention prevents competitors from using it to create identical or similar products. For example, when Post-it® notes came out, 3M had patented the technology behind them, and that gave 3M a valuable monopoly for many years. Understand, however, that the US Patent Office issues patents; they do not enforce them. So if a company infringes on your patent, you will have to defend your patent through civil litigation. 2. Additional Revenue: You can license your patent to other businesses. While it probably does not make sense to license your patent to a direct competitor, you could license it to companies in other industries and create a nice revenue stream. If the product that uses the invention is not producing the desired sales or profits for your business, you could then license the patent – or even sell the patent – to generate revenue from it. 3. Better Safe than Sorry: If you do NOT apply for a patent, and two or three years later you discover that a company is using your innovation to produce a product or service, you may regret not patenting the technology when you had the opportunity to do so.
